For this assignment, I created a differentiated task to support the needs of exceptional students. The task is a writing activity, in which students are provided with a picture and are required to develop and write a story that goes with the picture. This specific task would fit into a science unit on Biodiversity, since the picture is about clear cutting of a forest, however this idea can be used in any subject and with any topic. On the first page you will see the picture prompt that is given to all students in the class. The second page is the differentiation portion, and includes a story-map to help students who have difficulty organizing or generating their thoughts, and who need assistance and scaffolding to focus their ideas. These students can work through this sheet while brainstorming, as it reminds them of important parts of a story to be included.
This is a great strategy to use since it prompts students to organize their thoughts while encouraging creativity. There is no wrong answer for this sort of task. Students may interpret the picture in many different ways and their ideas will range greatly. This can be beneficial for exceptional students who are ‘outside-the-box’ thinkers, and allow them to show their ideas and to be creative as they develop their ideas to their fullest potential.
