The following is a checklist to assist teachers working with a student who has an Individual Education Plan, or throughout the process or receiving one.
- Be knowledgeable of student’s needs, strengths and weaknesses, and interests
- Have a set plan for the student, with clear and attainable goals in mind
- Know student’s current level of achievement in each subject area
- Keep all student work and assessment in an accessible area
- Take anecdotal notes on a daily basis
- Continually evaluate student’s progress
- Use explicit classroom management strategies or plans that have been developed to help the student succeed throughout the day
- Maintain open and positive communication with parent
- Notes in agenda
- Home communication book
- Phone calls
- Support parental involvement
- Inform parents or regular progress or set backs
- Discuss next steps with parents. Get feedback from them about transitions and progress outside of school
- Keep in contact with administration and school support staff
- Use your resources (Education for All, Learning for All, other ministry documents)
- Carry out instruction programs for the individual student
- Implement necessary modifications/accommodations for learning
- Provide differentiated teaching and assessment
- Make adjustments to teaching and expectations as necessary
